The World of Peruvian Paso Horses

I would like to start riding my Peruvian horse using an "austrailian" saddle. I have been riding with a friends "columbian" saddle. This worked well but I am unable to get one to fit my horse. He is quite wide. Her saddle only fits because it is old and "spread out". I tried an austrailian and would like to use on a permanent basis but do not want to restrict the natural movements of my peruvian horse. The customary peruvian saddle is just to heavy for me to manage. Can anyone offer suggestions or help me with my problem? Thanks.

I do not think an Australian saddle would restrict a Peruvian much. However, I am not completely familiar with them. An easier solution in my eyes would be to get a Peruvian work saddle with the basics. You can also take the floron and retrancas off leaving only the baticola in the back which makes the saddle extremely light. It may not be as fancy as a Peruvian show saddle but it would not restrict any movement of your horse and it would be very easy to carry.

In Lima there is a Lady who sells saddles with a combination of Colombian and Peruvian style, and the saddles are very light, and very confortable, any more info I can give you her phone # .actually I have one for sale only 1 time use.
My wife use one Colombian saddle is very light with Baticola, she founds the Peruvian to heavy. The gait is not affected

I've been using a Tucker plantation saddle, and it fits my wide-backed Peruvian horse very well, without restricting his gait. It also has a gel cushion seat, so it's very comfortable for me, as well.

Hi, a couple of days ago I discovered a sight called Sycamore Creek Saddles. At least one of the styles I checked out weighed around 20 lbs and they are made for Pasos. Laurel Davis

I have seen the site Sycamore Creek Saddles they look real nice and most Paso saddles fit Peruvians

I bought a trail saddle from a Ranch named
Ranchodelrey.com ( their saddles fit most gaited types horses)
I bought their Tereque 1 it weighs 17 lbs I love it for my Peruvian Colt it fits him nicely and doesn't interfere with his wide shoulders and he is short backed and the saddle isn't to long for him.
I hear the Boz saddle fits anything and are made really well and last forever.

Thank you Judy for your nice comments on our Paso gaited saddles. We are happy to say we are now the proud owners of a handsome chocolate Palomino Peruvian gelding! He was a rescue from very dire circumstances but is now comely along nicely and we are very proud of him. We are truly amazed at his smooth way of going and gentle temprament having owned Paso Finos most of our lives we can now see why many of our friends and customers ride this wonderful breed!

I went with a Brenda Imus 4 beat saddle. My wide backed Peruvian is comfortable and so am I. This saddle only weighs around 13 lbs. These saddles are made for gaited horses, they have the rounded back for short backed horses as well. Check it out or if you need more info email me at dawnfreiburger@verizon.net.

HI! I use an Aussie saddle on my mare when I go for long rides. I didnt like it at first. I thought it sat me to far forward, but after I took some of the stuffing out and rode her in it, it conformed to her back very nicely. I still use my peruvian saddle for parades and demos ect, but I love the Aussie. It is great on the trails. No bridging at all and she seems happy with it as well. I switched over from the aussie stirrups and put on wider western stirrups for a more comfortable fit. {I do miss the tapaderos on my peruvian saddle} at any rate it is a comfortable saddle and does not interfer with the shoulders of my mare. Good luck and happy trails... Deej

Thanks for your reply. I did go to the Aussie saddle and I love it. I can feel the horse better and he is much happier. Peruvian gear is to hot and heavy for what I use my horse for. Have fun!

Hello. Yes you can use a australian saddle. There are some saddle's part in the australian saddle, "sort of" of the Peruvian saddle. For exemple the seat and the cantles. Well the stirrups are totaly different.
But, tell me. Do you ever try a peruvian work saddle, they are light to handle. Let me know if u need some help

I have a young Peruvian mare and a young Tennessee Walker mare. I've always thrown different saddles on them, and never had an issue. I generally ride with my Wintec AP 500 English saddle though. But depending on what we do, I've had Western, English, Aussie, and use many different pads. Just throw on an Aussie and give it a try, just make sure it's not sitting on top of the withers and there is little bit of room, and also make sure the gullet is not pinching into the withers. And if you want to try Wintec, they do make them with wide trees. Mine has the adjustable gullet system, and I use a medium wide for my TWH and my Peruvian. For trail riding, I use a Synergist wool pad which really wicks away the moisture, and it nice and thick. And for schooling type riding, I just use an AP pad with a gel pad on top. I've never had a sore back issue with my girls.
