Profile Information

My Location: (City, State, Country)
Michie, Tennessee- United States of America
About Me:
The Marcum family was first introduced to the Peruvian Paso horse in 1968. For three years we met all the breeders we could, read every article available and attended many shows as well in order to learn as much as we could about these great horses.

In 1971 we purchased our first horse, San Buenaventura (later a National Champion) from one of the early US breeders and now world renowned breed expert , Mary Donald.

Since this time, I have been dedicated to learning as much as I could about our fantastic breed. I studied classical Peruvian equitation and training with three different maestro chalanes.

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pre-Veterinary medicine from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona where I was fortunate enough to learn even more about horses and horsemanship from acclaimed equine experts, including top international judges who taught me many lessons on conformation, soundness, and how to best judge horses.

I have been a successful professional trainer with numerous clients ranging from "backyard breeders" to top ranches. In addition, I was manager for one of the largest syndicates in breed history, and managed a 700 acre horse farm in New Jersey.

Beginning in 1978 I have conducted clinics and seminars in the United States and Canada. I was the first breed clinician to incorporate "fun classes" for the participants as a way to put into practice what they had learned.

In 1981, I became a carded Peruvian Paso judge. During my judging career I have judged more than 50 shows in the United States, Canada, Honduras (as the first North American judge invited to judge the Peruvian horse in a Latin country), Guatemala and El Salvador. Included in the shows that I have been honored to judge are 6 National Championship Shows in which I officiated in ALL divisions (Breeding, Gait and Performance). I was the only North American owner/breeder ever to judge the ALL DIVISIONS of the AAOBPPH Nationals in the history of that organization. It has always been my judging philosophy that the best horse during the class deserves the blue ribbon and the reputation of the horse, rider or breeder is meaningless to me. I have always done my best to judge by the rules and not by personal prejudice. To me, I have no friends nor enemies once the class starts.

I have served on show committees, club boards, PPHRNA Board of Directors, and served two terms as an RGM (Regional Governing Member) of the PPHRNA.

Throughout the years, I have developed strong opinions about our breed and how to best promote it here in North America. As a judge, I am a firm believer in consistency in class conduct and high ethical standards, and feel that judges should ALWAYS put the best interest of the breed and the individual horse ahead of any personal biases or interests. I am most interested in promoting a strong, sound, long lived horse rather than horses that have style but no substance.

My wife, Karen, first became involved in the breed in 1986, but has been a lifetime horsewoman. She shares the same love and respect for the breed that I do, and while not a professional trainer, she has a gentle, calming and healing way with horses. She and I own and operate Shiloh Gaited Horse Center in Tennessee where we train naturally gaited horses with special emphasis, of course, on the Peruvian Paso horse. We are available for lessons, consultations and clinics.
I am a:
Owner, Breeder, Trainer, Judge
I am a Member of These Associations:
NAPHA, Central States Peruvian Paso Horse Club
I would like to meet:
We look forward to meeting people who feel, as we do, that the Peruvian horse is the finest breed in the world, and each country and region should be honored for their unique contributions to our wonderful horses.

HALL OF FAME- APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY BY NAPHA BOARD!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone-

Well, it looks like it's happening. While the details will still have to be "ironed out" there will be a NAPHA Hall of Fame committee formed, and exact requirements will be finalized sometime in the near future. My thanks to everyone who has been helping with promoting this idea. If you are a NAPHA member, have 10 years or more experience with the Peruvian horse and are interested in serving on the committee let NAPHA know of your willingness to do so.

Possible NAPHA Hall of Fame Progress!

Although it is taking a LONG TIME it looks like there is progress with NAPHA considering a Hall of Fame. I have been working diligently on this, and hope that there will soon be something definitive. While it is looking good, more input to NAPHA will be greatly appreciated.

We've added more names to our shilohgaited.com "Hall of Fame"- check it out and add your nominee!

"Comments" Feature Now Available on shilohgaited.com Hall of Fame Page

It was suggested by Ricki Lechler that we try to provide a way for people to share memories they have of any of our "honorees" and to also offer a place where any of the "honorees" can share any of their thoughts as well.

I will not guarantee that it will work as planned, but we are hoping the "COMMENT" section on our HALL OF FAME page will do the trick!

Ricki- thanks for the great idea!

"Hall of Fame" Is Our Most Viewed Website Page!

There has been tremendous interest in our unofficial North American "Hall of Fame". How many of our "members" do you recognize? Who have we missed that you think should be on the list? Should NAPHA be starting their own Hall of Fame like so many of the other breeds have? We look forward to your viewing and input.

"Hall of Fame" Feature Now at shilohgaited.com

As many of you know, we have long promoted the idea of a NAPHA Hall of Fame to recognize those many people in North America who have contributed so much, in so many different ways, to the development and promotion of our wonderful breed. Unfortunately, as of this time, there has been no movement by NAPHA in that direction.

Because of this we have started our own "unofficial" Hall of Fame in our own attempt to bring a small amount of recognition to those so deserving. Check it out at our website… Continue

Hi Jeff and Karen, if you have a min - take a look at the video on my page -Don's favorite gait. He has an additional gear to go! He is doing great - best ever in strength and gait quality. He loves to ride with Anna as she lets him run. He knows when she puts the english saddle on and the snaffle bit in - man does he get excited! Thanks for helping us with him. Hope you are well.
We also added 3 photos of Aragon. Prim is well! Stay warm! David
